All of us at Anawim – Birmingham’s Centre for Women are delighted by the reception to our Big Give Women and Girls match funding campaign this October! We managed to secure £5,030 in donations and £5,000 in match funding over just seven days. This money will help us support women to leave abuse behind.
More than 130 donors made more than 150 donations to the campaign, from £1 to £1,300, showing the breadth of support there is in our community for Anawim. We are so grateful to everyone who donated, and those who supported us with events, including the Cliterature Club, The Juke’s Half Pint Run Club, Brew Ha Ha comedy and Rowan Silversmiths.
At Anawim we work with more than 2,100 women a year, a figure that has jumped around 20% year on year. That’s why funding like this is vital. WE need to be able to direct money to the area of most need as soon as possible. That might be funding a taxi, train ride, or hotel to ensure immediate safety. Our drop-in staff might signpost appropriate support and listen to concerns or a caseworker may accompany a woman to court and speak up there.
We work with women in a variety of ways, holistically, and dependant on their circumstances. Women can access courses and counselling at our centre, and we offer Domestic Violence Courses in prison too.
Joy Doal Anawim CEO says: “The response to this campaign has been amazing and we’re all delighted with the final total. £10,000 is such a large amount of money to raise in seven days – especially for our first match funding campaign. Thank you so much to everyone who supported us.”
